Dilek Hanif

Dilek Hanif, who has succeeded in bringing Anatolian culture to world fashion with her creative, courageous and visionary personality, is one of the pioneers of Turkish fashion history. Dilek Hanif was born on April 8, 1962 in Istanbul. Her father is the illusionist Lütfü Demirtok, who is known as Abrakadabra. Her interest in fashion started at a young age by helping her family's textile business. She has a sister and an older brother named Oya Demirtok, who is a writer. She studied at Erenköy Girls High School. She took care of educating himself in every subject by taking lessons such as pencil drawing, pattern work, and fabric painting at Mimar Sinan University. She got to know the fabrics in the boutique her mother opened in Princes' Islands after Teşvikiye street and started to learn the intricacies of the business. After getting married, Dilek makes a decision that will be a turning point in her life and wants to open her own business. Adding a little debt to her savings, she opens a 100 m2 workshop on the top floor in Osmanbey district. In 1990, she now owns a ready-made clothing workshop with two machinists. Dilek Hanif married Mehmet Hanif in 1983. She divorced in 2005. Sher has 2 daughters. She married architect Ali Somer in October 2006 in Budapest. Dilek Hanif founded her own brand "Dilek Hanif Line" in 1990. By working in a small workshop, she designed ready-to-wear collections targeting the modern woman. She starts off by preparing a collection of 100 pieces with feminine lines. Her first collection was auspicious for today's famous fashion designer, who opened his business and could not fit in her workshop. On the same days, two more apartments are vacated on the upper floor of her workshop. Dilek rents one of the flats as a warehouse and the other as a slaughterhouse. Thus, it started mass production in four flats, each of which is 100 m2. Her collections were presented in many distinguished stores in Turkey over time. Dilek Hanif started to take up all her time for the special orders of artists and individuals. One of these customers is Hülya Avşar. The art director of Hülya Avşar's program on a television channel sees the outfit prepared by Dilek Hanif and likes it very much. "Can you prepare something for Hülya Avşar's TV show?" the art director makes an offer and Hanif prepares clothes for Hülya Avşar's stage and TV show for 8 years, and her name begins to be mentioned in the TV show. When she found designing "Haute Couture" clothes more interesting and closer to herself, she closed her workshop in Osmanbey and opened her couture workshop and showroom in Teşvikiye Street in 1997. Since 1998, she left her ready-to-wear collection completely and focused on couture work. She held her first couture fashion show on April 8, 2002 at Hagia Irene. The traditional needlework figures she presented in her 2003 spring-summer collection brought her the "Most Successful Female Fashion Designer of the Year" award. She made her second big fashion show at Paris Haute Couture fashion week on January 20, 2004. Dilek Hanif is the first Turkish designer to present her "couture" collection during Paris Haute Couture fashion week. In 2004, she presented her collection at the US Embassy in Ankara to support the "Fashion Targets Breast Cancer" campaign led by Ralph Lauren. In the same year, she was invited to Lisbon for the European Union New Members Fair. Following these successes, she continued to present her outstanding collections that made a strong impression in world fashion at Paris Haute Couture Week every year. In 2011, the designer combined her talent in Couture with her entrepreneurial spirit and gave life to the ready-made clothing brand "Dilek Hanif". In addition to being a Turkish brand that opened up to the world, it managed to become a global brand with its sales points and production power in the international market. Dilek Hanif also drew attention with her collection inspired by the Ottoman Harem, which she realized in Stockholm in 2006. At the fashion show where 15 Swedish models took part, the outfits including embroidered cepkens and Ottoman motifs made a splash. Dilek Hanif, who uses many trends and motifs such as Japanese and Far Eastern influences, horn motifs, as well as Ottoman Motifs in her products, has become a famous brand whose collection is expected every year. Dilek Hanif also made a show by presenting her 2008 Summer Collection in Paris. Dilek Hanif introduced her Haute Couture spring-summer collection for the first time in 2017 in Cyprus. The lead model of the fashion show, sponsored by Merit International and choreographed by Uğurkan Erez, was Çağla Şikel.
